Late goal beats reserves at Tranmere

David Edgar - outstanding at the back
It was cruel on the young Burnley wide who had done so well to hold the home side before falling to that late goal, a free kick from just outside the box given for a handball against Richard Eckersley.

It also came with us down to ten men after Nik Kudiersky received his marching orders on 85 minutes for a second yellow card. There was certainly no complaint at the decision but until then Nik had been in top form alongside the very impressive David Edgar in the heart of our defence.

I usually report on reserve games having been to the game so tonight was a novel experience being able to watch from the comfort of home in front of the television although I do much prefer to see the games from a vantage point at the ground.

This, however, was a good alternative and would have been even better I would assume without the rantings of David Fairclough who seemed to do nothing other than contest every decision given against Liverpool whilst agreeing with every decision that went their way.

Both clubs had their managers present at the game. Rafa Benitez was sat their looking miserable alongside Sammy Lee, the bloke no one can understand but Owen Coyle was alongside his young professional striker Wes Fletcher on the pitch as the Clarets fielded a mix of youth (down to Joe McKee at 16) and experience (Christian Kalvenes).

It wasn't a game of clear cut chances with neither goalkeeper tested to any great extent and the nearest we came to a goal was when Fletcher played in Richard Eckersley who attempted to volley in but came closer to finding the road outside.

At the other end, one dropped cross apart, new signing Jonathan Lund's handling was excellent whilst right in front of him his two central defenders were in excellent form as were the two central midfielders Alex-Ray Harvey and Chris Anderson.

Harvey and Anderson actually came closest for the Clarets with shots from distance but we didn't really test the home goalkeeper Hansen enough.

Still a draw would have been a good result and that's what we would have got but for that late, late finish.

The teams were;
