It will be like having the reserve league back tonight

Last updated : 08 October 2013 By Tony Scholes

That new competition is the Under-21 Premier League Cup and as a category three club we start at the beginning of the competition in Qualifying Round 1 with this home game tonight, and it is against Wigan.

It is the last of the ties to be played in this round and the winners will travel to Gresty Road to face Crewe in Qualifying Round 2.

The results in Qualifying Round 1 are

North

PRESTON 0 HULL 2
DONCASTER 0 NOTTS COUNTY 3

South

BOURNEMOUTH 1 PLYMOUTH 2
PETERBOROUGH 3 COLCHESTER 2
EXETER 4 TORQUAY 1
WIMBLEDON 2 GILLINGHAM 0
WATFORD 1 BRISTOL ROVERS 1 - WATFORD WON 4-3 ON PENALTIES

As seen from the results above, the tie will be decided tonight with extra time to be played, if necessary, before going to a penalty shoot out.

It is difficult to determine what the teams will be but the rules permit each club to field up to three outfield players and a goalkeeper who are above the age of 21. This could give Sean Dyche the opportunity to give some game time to players such as Kevin Long, Brian Stock, Junior Stanislas and Keith Treacy who have recently been on the bench for the first team.

The bulk of the team will come from the development squad which should see players such as Alex Coleman, Tom Anderson, Archie Love, Cameron Howieson, Steven Hewitt and Jason Gilchrist, all members of the 2011/12 FA Youth Cup semi-final team, get some game time.

Kick off is 7 p.m. and admission is £3 adults and £1 concessions although all season ticket holders, those of both Burnley and Wigan, will gain entry for £1 on production of their season ticket book.

Should we win tonight, the next game at Crewe must be played within fourteen days of week commencing 26th October.

This round will see the introduction of th Category 2 clubs and below is the revised draw for that round.
