It was excellent from start to finish

Hoskin fielded a younger team than he's had at his disposal previously and they turned in an outstanding ninety minutes of football on a difficult surface at Victory Park, winning the game with two goals from Wes Fletcher.

"It was excellent from start to finish," Ash said after the game. "I like them to play football and I think the young kids came in and showed a great attitude and great desire to win a football match.

"I appreciate Preston had a young side out but so did we and I think the way we went about winning the game was the main factor. I am a great believer in getting the ball out from the back and playing through midfield, especially with the players we've got. They are footballers, who play it on the floor so I was very pleased.

"I thought Chris Anderson deserved a special mention. I thought he was absolutely terrific. He's normally in there with his best buddy Alex-Ray Harvey and today he was in there with a young kid in David Lynch, who also did very, very well."

Hoskin added: "I thought we were very unfortunate not to be ahead by half time. I thought the way we played in the first half and the chances we created it was just a matter of time before we scored.

"I said to them at half time to keep doing the same things and we will get an opportunity and as luck happens it fell to Wes Fletcher and when he gets that kind of chance he generally puts them in."

He saw his team go top of the league again and said: "It's good for the lads to look at the table and see we are top. We are not shipping many goals, the Tranmere game was a little bit of a fault, but overall the progression and the tempo and the way the lads are playing can only stand them in good stead."
