Heavy defeat for youths as Oldham win league

Last updated : 16 April 2006 By Tony Scholes

Back in January we were top of the league but since we lost a number of the squad it has proved to be very difficult for the young Clarets and yesterday's 7-1 defeat at Port Vale took the run of defeats to nine with no fewer than 36 goals conceded.

Only bottom club Macclesfield have now conceded more goals than us this season as Vale, now third in the league, added seven more to the goals against column. They are three points clear of us whilst two good results for Tranmere this week have seen them climb to third asw the season draws to a close.

Oldham's win over Wrexham, coupled with Preston's surprise defeat at Rochdale means the Latics have been crowned champions. They have suffered just two league defeats all season, one of them at the hands of the Clarets earlier in the season, and are now 22 points clear of North End who have just six games left. Apart from lifting the title they are also the leading scorers, they have hit 96 and that's 41 more than either Preston or Tranmere.

We've still five games to play, as well as a Lancashire FA Youth Cup tie, as the season's end date draws nearer. For three of those games we don't yet have a date and we are next in action on Saturday when we are at home to Blackpool.

Our opponents in the Lancashire Youth Cup are Bury, they beat Wigan in the last round, and the tie will be played at Gigg Lane and we await a date for that game, having qualified with a superb extra time win against Oldham in the last round.

Yesterday's results:

Blackpool 2 Stockport 5

Bury 3 Macclesfield 1

Chester 0 Carlisle 1

Oldham 3 Wrexham 0

Port Vale 7 Burnley 1

Rochdale 2 Preston 0

Tranmere 1 Shrewsbury 0

Wigan 0 Walsall 0
