Hanley and Smith goals not enough

Last updated : 12 December 2005 By Tony Scholes
Connor Smith - scored the second goal
Despite playing well in the first half we found ourselves having to come from behind and it was Hanley, with his first youth goal of the season, who brought us back into the game. Things went worse in the second half and we went 3-1 down before Smith pulled one back late in the game with a deflected shot.

There was to be no equaliser though and having lost our 100% record last week when we drew 1-1 at Carlisle we have now suffered our first defeat against a side who were languishing near the bottom.

But at least we are getting some games in now, and that is what has cost us with the players having gone five weeks without a game before the Carlisle game.

The team on Saturday was: Mark Crossley, Rob Henry (Dean Stott), Chris McCann, Martin Reilly, Paul Casey (Jack Overson), Ali Akbar, Connor Smith, Nicky Platt, Adam Kay, Cayne Hanley (Rob Turner), Kyle Lafferty.

Elsewhere in the league, Oldham and Preston both stretched their leads above us. Oldham, hardly surprisingly, were the highest scorers of the day hitting Rochdale for five to take their total of league goals to 53 from just 13 games. Preston were held to a 2-2 draw by Shrewsbury but that was enough to take them a point clear of us.

The results this weekend were:

Burnley 2 Stockport 3
Macclesfield 2 Wrexham 0
Port Vale 2 Blackpool 0
Preston 2 Shrewsbury 2
Rochdale 0 Oldham 5
Tranmere 3 Bury 1
Wigan 3 Chester 2
