Defeat number twelve at Hull

Last updated : 14 April 2004 By Tony Scholes

Fola Onibuje was lining up against Hull for the second match in succession having appeared there for Preston just a couple of weeks ago.

Hull attacked in the early stages but only really forced Michael Hale into action once when he saved well from Jamie Forrester but they should have gone in front with a couple of chances that went wide.

But the Clarets responded well and Paul Musselwhite did well to save from Alex Taylor after Danny Pitham crossed well after a good run down the left hand side.

There was more Hull pressure to contend with and then right on half time it was almost the Clarets who took the lead through a Marc Pugh free kick but it went just wide of the post.

That spurred the home side into action and they took the lead in stoppage time when Jon Walters gave Hale no chance with a right foot shot.

The youngest of the O’Neill family came on as a second half substitute for Hull. Just a couple of years ago Matt’s younger brother Ed was a Burnley substitute in a Youth Cup tie at Manchester City but moved on to Hull for his scholarship.

And before the second half was really underway we were two behind when Simon Russell converted a low cross from the right with a shot that went in off the post.

The young Clarets tried to get back into the game and we did have a couple of half chances. It was Hull who always looked the more likely but in the end they had to settle for just a two goal win.

The result leaves us hanging on at the bottom with little hope now of avoiding the drop.

Chris Scott, on trial from Sunderland, impressed at full back whilst Fola Onibuje started well enough but faded from the game.
