Danny gets first Burnley goal

Danny Karbassiyoon - first Burnley goal
Danny K’s goal came early in the second half, and it brought the Clarets level after we had gone behind in the first five minutes of the game. That early goal was a blow after we had started the brighter of the two teams and almost went in front ourselves, but Tranmere got clear and although Mark Crossley did well to save the first shot they were able to put in the rebound.

Burnley tried to get back at the home side but didn’t really come close during the remainder of the first half. There were a couple of long range shots and a free kick from just outside the box that Garreth O’Connor curled just wide of the far post to the keeper’s left.

It all changed in the second half as the Clarets took the initiative and we’d already had a couple of good efforts on goal before the equaliser came. We got down the right hand side and when the ball came in Danny K had his moment of glory as he hit home from around fifteen yards giving the keeper no chance.

The goal lifted us and we really should have gone on and won it after that but the nearest we came to getting in front was when their goalkeeper got down well to smother the ball as Marc Pugh closed in.

When their winner came it was against the run of play as the referee, who by now had decided to yellow card just about anything that moved, pointed to the spot following a foul by Duane Courtney.

Needless to say the yellow card appeared again and the Tranmere player made no mistake from the spot. Lifted by that they came very close to doubling the lead with a shot that crashed against the post and away to safety. We never looked as though we might get back into it after that.

The teams were,

Tranmere: Palethorpe, James, Holmes, Henry, Lovell, Curran, Fowler, Jones, Brown, Davies (Garry 88), Dickinson. Subs not used: Connolly, Corrigan, Holden, Ferguson.
