Cup defeat for youngsters

Jay Rodriguez - scored our second with a header
With just under twenty minutes gone, Jack Overson handled a ball in the penalty box and received a second yellow card from the referee and that signalled the start of what proved to be a difficult morning for the depleted Burnley side in the first round of the cup competition. Jack had been somewhat unfortunate to receive his first yellow card, but could have no complaints at the second and that left us with a mountain to climb.

It was always going to be a difficult morning and it is worth noting the players missing from the line up. We were without goalkeeper Jonathan Sergeant and defenders Dean Stott, Tom Blackler and Tom Bradley. The midfield was without captain Connor Smith and Joe O'Neill whilst both Rob Turner and Alex McDonald were ruled out up front.

The game had been fairly even but Stockport converted the penalty from the handball and within a minute had doubled their lead and there really was no way back for the Clarets after that and by half time we trailed 3-1 with Under-15 substitute Chris Anderson having scored our goal.

We had further problems in the second half and conceded two more goals before Jay Rodriquez pulled one back with an excellent header into the bottom corner. It didn't signal an unexpected come back and by the final whistle the visitors had added three more to win the game 8-2.

So we are out of the cup at the first hurdle, but more importantly we can only hope to get some of the injured players back as soon as possible, games are just going to get tougher and tougher until we can get a stronger and more experienced team out onto the field.

Today's team: Trialist, Ben Hoskin, Jack Overson, Richard Cowan, Paul Casey, Ash Young (Dale Underwood), Alex-Ray Harvey, Adam Kay, Ali Akbar, Lewis Craig (Chris Anderson), Jay Rodriguez.
