Closing in on the top

James Craggs - back for Burnley on Saturday after injury
In midweek Wrexham reserves held Chester to a 0-0 draw, a result which saw Chester lose the leadership of the Pontin's League. On Saturday the two youth teams met and again there wasn't a goal between the two neighbours and those dropped points saw the Welsh side lose their place at the top of the league.

They would regain that lead if they won their game in hand, but for now the new leaders are Bury who sit just one point ahead of the Clarets after coming from behind to win at Morecambe. Bury trailed 2-0, and after pulling level in the second half then found themselves behind again at 3-2 before winning it with two late goals.

They were the league's top scorers on Saturday although it was Burnley and Preston who had the biggest wins, both of us winning 3-0. Preston overcame bottom of the league Accrington who were without a number of their players having had five sent off at Morecambe two weeks earlier.

North End youth coach Jamie Hoyland said: "Ideally we should have scored seven our eight goals which would have looked more handsome for us. The win is the most important thing though."

With five of the nine games drawn, the only other winners were Walsall who beat Port Vale 3-2.

This weekend sees the first round of the Youth Alliance Cup and the Clarets travel to play York City. York are in the North East Conference and have won two and lost five of their games this season.

A week later we are back in league action with an away game against Oldham, and that's a fixture that usually produces goals.
