Stockport were level on points with North End ahead of the weekend games but they were beaten at Walsall who themselves had slipped behind the front runners only the week before. That result brought Walsall level on points with Stockport and they were joined by Wigan who were home winners against Shrewsbury.

It could have been four clubs all on 22 points at the top had Preston lost but that didn't happen. They beat Oldham 4-2 at home and now sit those three points above the rest.

Preston's four was by no means the biggest score of the day. Suddenly Port Vale have found some form and taken goalscoring to a new level. They'd won just one of their first nine games this season and were stuck right at the bottom of the league.

Then, out of the blue, they hit Tranmere for six just over a week ago. And on Saturday then went one better and scored seven in a massive win against last season's champions Wrexham.

Blackpool were the latest club to find themselves on the bottom of the league, but a point at home against Morecambe has seen them go above Accrington who find themselves down there again. In the other game there was a win for Bury against Carlisle.

The results, the next fixtures and Burnley's goalscorers are all shown below.
