Clarets lead cut

Vale did us a favour last week in beating Wigan, who should have been our opponents on Saturday, but they couldn’t follow that up this week and despite home advantage went down to a big 6-1 defeat against North End.

This means Preston, who have played a game more than us, are now just two points behind us, and behind them come Oldham who also had a good win on Saturday, winning 3-0 at home to Stockport.

It was a good day for those in the top group who did play and Tranmere matched Oldham’s result, their victory coming away to Carlisle.

It does mean the top of the table does look a lot closer and remember, we were robbed of a title last year simply because we were unable to play enough of our home fixtures.

Saturday’s results were:

Burnley v Wigan – Postponed
Carlisle 0 Tranmere 3
Chester 2 Macclesfield 2
Oldham 3 Stockport 0
Port Vale 1 Preston 6
Walsall 1 Bury 0
Wrexham 1 Blackpool 2

This coming week is cup week and the Clarets will be in action away against Chester in the quarter finals, having come through two other away ties at Rotherham and Boston.

The quarter final draw

Chester v Burnley
Preston v Bradford City
Stockport v Rochdale
Tranmere v Oldham

League game this week (all other league games called off for cup):

Bury v Port Vale
