Hat tricks for both Michael Kightly and Marvin Sordell

Burnley fielded a strong team for this game and were soon in front when Kightly took advantage of some good play from Ross Wallace down the right and converted from the edge of the box.

It should have been 1-1 soon after but Matt Gilks did what Tom Heaton had done on Saturday, saving a penalty kick low to his left, but within a minute it was 1-1 through Crewe's Marcus Haber.

Marvin Sordell restored the lead, coming inside on the left to finish well and then Kightly made it 3-1, again converting after receiving the ball from Wallace.

Just before half time it was 4-1 and a hat trick for Kights who got on the end of a Steven Reid cross to score.

There was no let up for Crewe in the second half. With less than three minutes gone, Sordell got a second and then completed his hat trick with the impressive Wallace again a provider.

There were still three goals to come. Nathan Lowe, on as a substitute, got the next before Danny Lafferty hit the goal of the game, and another sub Cameron Howieson completed the scoring to give Burnley an emphatic 9-1 victory.

The Burnley team was: Matt Gilks, Steven Reid (Alex Whitmore 79), Kevin Long, Luke O'Neill, Danny Lafferty (Luke Conlan 79), Ross Wallace (Jadan Hall 66), Nathaniel Chalobah (Nathan Lowe 66), Steven Hewitt (Luke Daly 66), Michael Kightly (Cameron Howieson 66), Marvin Sordell (Jason Gilchrist 79), Sam Vokes. Sub not used: Conor Mitchell.
