Clarets go down at Shrewsbury as Blackpool clinch Alliance title

Jamie Frost scored at Shrewsbury

We travelled to Shrewsbury with a very young team. There were no second year scholars in Terry Pashley's team which was made up of first year scholars and schoolboys. They went down to a 3-1 defeat with Jamie Frost scoring our goal.

Blackpool had suffered a shock defeat in midweek at the hands of Carlisle. It was only their second defeat of the season; the previous defeat came at Rochdale in August in only their fourth game of the season and this result brought to an end a run of 17 undefeated games.

That left them with some work to do to ensure the title was theirs and a home game against bottom club Morecambe seemed perfect. They struggled in the first half but eventually took the lead on the hour before scoring a second deep into stoppage time.

They still needed Oldham to drop points and they duly did, drawing 5-5 against Wigan at home.

Blackpool youth coach Richie Kyle put their success down to hard work. "My initial emotion is delight, it's been a long season and we've worked extremely hard for it," he said.

"I'm proud of the lads because they've worked tirelessly on a daily basis. They give me everything, they listen, they want to learn and this is the reward for everything they have put in.

"The lads have got ability and I have said that, if they put that together with attitude and effort, they will get success in anything they do in life, not just football."

Oldham will finish second but it took a big comeback for them to get that point against Wigan after they trailed 4-1 at the interval. Coach Tony Philliskirk admitted: "It was a crazy, crazy game. We defended poorly in the first half but valiantly in the second half."

Our fixtures for the season will be completed this week with an away game at Bury tomorrow followed by the last game this Saturday at Gawthorpe against Rochdale.
