Clarets get league leaders in cup

Marc Pugh - scored twice against Oldham earlier in the season
In all my years of watching Burnley these ties had been played on Turf Moor, that was until last season when a home game against Blackpool was played at Rossendale United’s Dark Lane ground.

This season though the game will be played at the training ground at Gawthorpe and is scheduled for Monday 20th February with a 2:00 p.m. kick off.
As the Clarets went down to that heavy 4-1 defeat at Preston on Saturday it enabled Oldham to increase their lead at the top eleven points, although the Clarets still have three games in hand. Oldham picked up another three points with a narrow 1-0 win against Bury.

We’ve met before this season, in a Youth Alliance League game at Gawthorpe that we won 5-4 with Kyle Lafferty and Marc Pugh both scoring twice and Martin Reilly also scoring. With Kyle away at Darlington and the other two over the age limit for the cup, none of them will be in the line up when the tie is played.

And it was Oldham who put is out of the competition last season, in the semi-final at Boundary Park On that occasion Cayne Hanley scored twice for the Clarets but we were beaten 3-2 in extra time. We did get our revenge though in the Youth Alliance Cup on an extraordinary morning at Oldham’s training ground last April.

We were 3-0 down within the first few minutes of the game but fought back to 3-3 and then hit a late equaliser to make it 4-4 and take it into extra time. We even fell behind again but after it all ended all square at 5-5 we won it on penalties and earned the right to play Swindon in the final.

They’ve been excellent games against Oldham, usually a bigger, and more physical side than ourselves, and this one could be yet another classic.
But there will be league and league cup action before then and last week’s results and this week’s fixtures are below.
