Clarets fight through the cold

Chris McCann - scored the third with a tremendous drive
A strong wind spoiled the game and made it difficult for the two goalkeepers, one in each half, who had difficulties in kicking the ball either out of their hands or on the deck. The Clarets as a team made more of the advantage when with the wind behind them.

The game was only a few minutes old when we took the lead. After a good build up the ball was passed through into Marc Pugh’s path and as the Wigan keeper came out he calmly slotted it into the corner of the net. The ball appeared to take an eternity to cross the line, but eventually it did.

Wigan were offering very little except for a couple of corners that came to nothing and there was no real threat to the Burnley goal. Ryan Townsend, returning to full fitness, was in good form at the back and his return has released Chris McCann into the midfield where he is beginning to look a really good player.

A 1-0 lead at half time to take into the second half when we would have the wind behind us. The only problem was initially that we kept over hitting the final pass and there were some that greyhounds wouldn’t have caught.

The goals had to come and they did starting with one from Alex Taylor. The Wigan keeper failed to hold a shot from outside the box and Alex was the first to react and he placed it to the keeper’s left.

The young Clarets were coasting now and Wigan were chasing shadows and it was soon three. Chris McCann had already posted a warning with a tremendous drive from outside the box which hit the post. This time he hit an even better one, again from distance, which flew into the top corner. That was a cue for great celebration from the players and also allowed coach Terry Pashley the luxury of making a triple change as Adam Jones, Cayne Hanley and Tom Ince came on for the three goalscorers Pugh, Taylor and McCann.

They all slotted in well and we went four up with another peach. Good work down the right by Kyle Lafferty and Hanley saw the ball released to Nicky Platt who rolled it on to Jones on the edge of the box.

Jones sent an absolute screamer into the bottom left of the corner bringing with it more celebrations for the popular Jones.

A 4-0 win, wins against Wigan at this level used to be a very rare event, this is the second this season as we continue to get stronger at this level.

The team today was: Mark Crossley, Rob Henry, Neal Trotman, Ryan Townsend, Martin Reilly, Marc Pugh (Adam Jones), Nicky Platt, Joe Booth, Chris McCann (Tom Ince), Kyle Lafferty, Alex Taylor (Cayne Hanley).

We are next in action next Saturday morning, kick off 11:30 a.m. when we take on Doncaster Rovers in the Alliance Cup – that is if Gawthorpe is fit.
