Clarets crash out of cup after shock start

Nathaniel Chalobah taken to hospital with throat injury

That first goal gave Michael Keane a horror start to his Burnley career. With the clock showing no more than seven seconds gone he played a back pass that goalkeeper Alex Cisak just got to, but could only hit it at the advancing Sone Aluko with the ball cannoning off the Hull player and into the net.

It couldn't have been worse for him but he settled into the game and played well enough with his fellow loan player Nathaniel Chalobah providing the brighter moments for us before he was finally substituted after a number of knocks.

We really struggled to cope after that early blow and by not much past 7:20 the game could have been well and truly over.

Former Blackpool player Tom Ince thought he'd doubled the lead soon after. Cisak was far too slow to react as he ran onto a ball from Aluko and he beat him far too easily. Thankfully he didn't beat the assistant's flag and the goal was ruled out for offside.

We were making far too many bad errors and another cost us the second goal, this time Danny Lafferty who allowed Hull to get a cross in from the left which was headed home by Will Aimson.

They might have had a third too but Cisak saved well, yet for much of the half the play was towards the Hull goal where we failed to create anything of note and the visitors were always a threat when they did get forward.

If that was the first half then the second was somewhat different. I can't recall Hull ever offering anything at all in the second 45 minutes with much of the play continuing to go towards their goal.

They didn't have one shot at goal after the break but the Clarets, who dominated play, just couldn't get that breakthrough. Only a last ditch tackle denied Cameron Howieson and Jason Gilchrist was unfortunate on a couple of occasions.

But the goal wouldn't come and eight minutes from time we also lost Chalobah. He'd been in the wars more than once in the second half and had also been our best player, showing more than enough to suggest he'll be a key player for us during the next three months.

The last time he required treatment finally forced him off. The medical team came across right in front of us over the touchline. My first thoughts were that he had a neck problem and then it looked as though there was a potential concussion. It's since been revealed that he's been caught by a Hull defender and has a throat problem. He's gone to hospital as a precaution.

There was no comeback for Burnley. We might just have still been in the competition but for the early errors, but they cost us and we'll now have to wait for the Lancashire Senior Cup.
