Clarets close gap on Carlisle

It was only Carlisle's second defeat of the season and it now leaves them five points behind leaders Wrexham with two games in hand, but now just four points behind Carlisle are the Clarets who have played three games fewer.

Whilst Carlisle went down to defeat we beat Tranmere and Wrexham recorded a 2-1 win at Morecambe to increase their lead. We don't have to play Carlisle now but we have a date with Wrexham in just under four weeks and that could prove a crucial game.

No other side is in with a chance of winning the league, and certainly not Blackpool who went down to another heavy defeat. They were beaten 6-0 at home to Stockport and this was the biggest win of the day with Oldham also recording a big win, a 4-0 home success against Chester.

There were also wins on Saturday for Preston, Rochdale and Shrewsbury but pride of place in the last week goes to Accrington who beat Morecambe last Monday 2-1. It was their first win of the season having gone into the game with just one point.

Burnley are at home to Bury this coming Saturday, and speculation suggests that our second years will have learned by then whether they are going to be offered professional contracts with the club. Carlisle and Wrexham, our rivals at the top of the league, play Chester and Rochdale respectively.
