Remco van der Schaaf - an ever present in the reserves this season
We'd slipped to third through no fault of our own, but simply because we'd had two blank weeks and seen both Tranmere and Preston go above us whilst Manchester City were fourth despite a 100% record.

That record went on Tuesday when City played Tranmere at Hyde United's Tameside Stadium. City were twice in front but both times Tranmere fought back to get themselves a point. The first two goals came two minutes apart in the first half with Danny Holmes scoring for Tranmere.

The second equaliser took longer. City scored their second in the first minute of the second half and there were only four minutes remaining when Gareth Edds volleyed home following a corner.

Over at Victory Park, Chorley it was visitors Carlisle who took all the points against Preston. All the goals came in the first half. Danny Carlton gave Carlisle the lead but Rob Turner equalised for North End ten minutes before the break. But five minutes before half time a shot was going nowhere before it diverted off Gary Madine to restore the lead for the Cumbrians and give them all the points.

Preston reserve team coach Jamie Hoyland was philosophical after the game and said: "It was one of those that might have hit the corner flag but it has taken a deflection after the lad has gone to strike it. Fair play to them, it's gone in and Chris Neal has got no chance with it."

Morecambe were new to this league last season and had no problems as they stormed to the championship. Second time round isn't proving to be quite as easy and they are stuck at the bottom with just two points.

Their latest defeat came at the hands of Accrington yesterday when two goals from Andrew Smith were enough to give the home side all three points.

In the other game played Bury ran out 3-2 winners in the game against Rochdale.
