It was an easy 4-0 win for City against a Morecambe side that haven't started as if they are likely to go on and repeat last season's first place finish. That's no fewer than nine goals they've conceded in two games having lost to Tranmere last week.

Burnley and Tranmere are hot on the heels of City and had either won last night would have been right up there with them. But despite taking a 3-0 lead we had to settle for a point when Terry Gornell hit a second half hat trick.

The two other Lancashire teams in the Championship both saw their reserve teams go down to defeat. Blackpool suffered a 1-0 reverse at Bury whilst Preston made the trip to Rossendale to play Rochdale and went back with a 4-1 hammering.

Lee Thorpe scored twice for 'Dale in this game and they included a couple of trialists including former Manchester City defender Richard Edghill who had a trial at Burnley in pre-season five years ago. He ended last season at Macclesfield.

There's a break now and the league resumes in two weeks time when the Clarets will be back home (in Accrington) against Rochdale.
