They've played two games more than us in the Alliance, and it's the same with the reserves with Carlisle having played nine whilst the Clarets completed only their seventh game on Wednesday at Accrington.

That game was one of four playerd this week with Manchester City, Rochdale and Blackpool also claiming wins. City's came on Tuesday against Preston in a game played at Hyde United.

Preston led in this game with an Adam Barton penalty but City came back to equalise with a penalty of their own through Jack Redshaw. The home side won it deep into stoppage time when a shot from substitute Robert Mark went straight through the goalkeeper's legs.

This game saw a return to action for former Burnley apprentice Neal Trotman. North End paid £500,000 for him last January but injury has ruled him out and this has been his first game this season. He got through it well enough although it was Trotman who gave away the penalty.

At Rossendale on Wednesday afternoon, where I've been assured it was just as cold as it was at Accrington, Rochdale were two up after just seven minutes. Both goals came from Joe Thompson crosses, the first was headed in by Lee McEvilly with Scott Wiseman volleying in the second.

Morecambe pulled on back with a goal from Michael Carr but Thompson himself restored Rochdale's two goal advantage before Diarmuid O'Carroll scored a late second for the Shrimpers. Morecambe won this league last season but this season are rooted to the bottom.

In the remaining game, Blackpool fielded a strong side against Tranmere and run out 3-2 winners. The likes of Marlon Broomes, David Vaughan and Ian Harte were in the side but they went behind to a Josh McAuley goal.

Blackburn's Jack Riley, currently on trial at Blackpool, brought them level and then got a second to put them in front. It looked all over when Jake Hobbs made it 3-2 but Tranmere gave them a difficult end to the game when Paul Henry pulled one back. But they held on for the win.

That's it for 2008, and the next set of fixtures will be played on Wednesday 7th January when the Clarets host Preston. Those fixtures, along with this week's results and our goalscorers are shown below.
