Blow to title hopes

Oliver Devenney - scored the second goal
It was an unfamiliar looking line up with the side shorn of Chris Anderson, Alex-Ray Harvey, Michael King and Liam Newman who were all ruled out with injury. We included two Under-16 players in Ross Wilson and Thomas Taylor and started the game with a 3-4-3 formation with Dan Brown, himself just back from injury, playing in the centre of defence alongside Nik Kudiersky and Chris Lynch.

It all started well and we were soon in front with a powerful shot from Wilson on the right flying into the far corner and a win very much looked on the cards as Oliver Devenney netted with an overhead kick following a corner.

It could have been even worse for the visitors when the goalkeeper wrestled Wes Fletcher to the ground and then held him down. The only question was what colour card it would be but the referee instead opted to wave play on.

Shrewsbury pulled one back after a hopeful ball into the box. However, we were still worth our interval lead and you wouldn't have backed against us at that stage.

Unfortunately Shrewsbury grabbed a second early in the second half and that left us with an uphill task. We just couldn't get that third goal but we came so, so close on a number of occasions.

We found a goalkeeper in form. He made several good saves including two when Wes Fletcher was through one-on-one, but he was beaten twice. First Chris Lynch hammered a free kick from thirty yards against the bar and then Dom Knowles found the same bar with a shot from the edge of the box.

It wasn't to be, and on the warmest day imaginable at Gawthorpe we had to settle for a point. We needed to win three out of our last five games to win the league but that's two of them gone with just one point. That means quite simply we cannot afford to drop a point now from the remaining games or the title will be Wrexham's.

Our team was: Stef Ritchie, Dan Brown, Nik Kudiersky, Chris Lynch, Dil Chaggar, Oliver Devenney, Dom Knowles, Jake McEneaney, Ross Wilson, Wes Fletcher, Thomas Taylor.
