Big night for youth team against Manchester United

Jason Gilchrist, a United fan, scored a hat trick that night as the Clarets then won a trip to face United's neighbours City in the next round at the Etihad Stadium.

Jason Gilchrist was last season's hat trick hero

That win will live long in the memory. It's a long time since a Burnley team won at Old Trafford; back to the 1960s by my reckoning, and now we've been given the very difficult chance to beat them again, this time at home.

We've been paired with them in the same round so Turf Moor will stage an FA Youth Cup tie for the first time since that semi-final against Blackburn two seasons ago, and all but three of that Burnley side that won at Old Trafford will be available.

Having said that, it's a significant three who are now too old for the competition. Hat trick man Gilchrist is one of them, along with Luke Conlan and Cameron Howieson, both of whom had outstanding games in that win.

Needless to say they will be favourites, and the United youth coach Paul McGuinness has said: "I would imagine there will be a bit of a crowd in and to play at any league ground is great for them.

"It's why the FA Youth Cup is so important. It provides the platform to play in that environment and, if you get towards the final, you usually play in front of big crowds. So it is a big boost to your experience and confidence if you do well."

McGuinness added: "It's all good experience for them. To get an idea of first team football, playing against different teams and to have that big match feel as part of the build up to playing in the Youth Cup.

"It's better than just playing at a training ground every week, as they have been in a stadium and there is a bit of transition there. This is an opportunity for them to have a run but you just cannot tell how far you are going to go.

"The more you get used to it, the confidence gets going and you get on a roll so it can be a springboard for people's careers. It really can help them if the managers sees them do well."

Manchester United's young players play in the UEFA Youth League as well as the bigger English clubs with the top category academies whilst the Clarets continue to play in the Youth Alliance League run by the Football League.

We are worlds apart in terms of youth development but tonight the two teams will start equal on the Turf Moor pitch. It will be difficult for us, no doubt about that, but it was last year when we turned in that memorable performance at Old Trafford.

Coach Terry Pashley is expected to have Cameron Dummigan, who was recently on the bench for the first team, and Jamie Frost available. Both have played mainly this season with the development squad.

He  will select tonight from: Callum Jakovlevs, Conor Mitchell, Cameron Dummigan, Waqas Azam, Charlie Holt, Callum Richardson, Alex Whitmore, Luke Daly, Brandon Wilson, Kevin Ly, Nathan Lowe, Christian Hill, Lewis Nuttall, Brad Jackson, Evan Galvin, Jamie Frost, Ntumba Massanka.

Kick off tonight is 7 p.m. with the Bob Lord Stand open. Prices are £3 adults, £1 concessions.
