Avon Calling - still unresolved at top and bottom

Michael Clegg - his goal saw Oldham climb three points above the Clarets
Although they did not play, Sheffield United’s title hopes received a boost last week due to the inability of their rivals to record a win between them.

Huddersfield and Rotherham completed their seasons with a 1-1 draw at the McAlpine, a result which ends the Terriers championship aspirations. Greg Kelly had given troubled Town a first half lead, but Will Hoskins equalised for the Millers.

Preston could still finish above the Blades, but they did their chances (and ours of avoiding relegation) no good with a 1-0 defeat at Oldham. Michael Jackson missed a penalty before Michael Clegg’s late winner gave the Latics the points.

Marc Pugh’s last minute equaliser for the Clarets at home to Walsall effectively ended the Saddlers’ challenge too. At the age of 16 years and 21 days it is possible that Pughie has become the youngest ever Claret to score in a reserve game.

Wolves remain in touch, but will have been disappointed to have only drawn 0-0 at relegated Bury. 76 fans turned out for this one (5% of the paid attendance?).

In the final game played Tranmere put paid to Barnsley’s hopes by beating them 4-1. Griff Jones’ goal for the Reds puts him at the top of the scorers’ table, but Tranmere seem strangely reluctant to release any details concerning their scorers.

The Clarets play twice this week knowing that a defeat in one of them will virtually relegate them. Although we only trail Oldham by three points their goals for tally is such that even a 1-0 defeat in one game will leave us needing to win the other by four.
