Alliance Affairs - Draw takes Clarets second

Last updated : 09 October 2002 By Peter Heywood

Saturday’s four games produced 18 goals, half of which were recorded in an amazing game at Carlisle. Rochdale, our opponents this weekend, were the visitors, and had raced into a 3-0 lead at the interval. Carlisle coach Billy Barr later admitted that "a few harsh words were said at halftime". Whatever he said must have worked as United then slammed five past Dale’s hapless goalie. Rory Patterson completed a hat-trick in pulling one back, but Carlisle withstood a nervous last few minutes to roll out 5-4 winners.

Rochdale’s four games have now produced a remarkable 26 goals, with 17 conceded. Let’s hope the Clarets continue this trend on Saturday.

Tranmere had their home game with Oldham postponed; nothing to do with the weather, but Oldham could not field a team due to injuries. The Latics must train them hard as they seemed to be fit enough at the end of the previous Saturday’s game at Gawthorpe.

Preston took advantage of Rovers’ inactivity to open up a five-point lead. Once again they had to come from behind, this time at home to Bury. The Shakers scored after only 30 seconds, but that was about their only involvement in the game as Preston went on to dominate, Langmead on target yet again.

Our home point against Blackpool, courtesy of Stephen Richardson’s first of the season, moves us up into second place. Matthew Blinkhorn scored for the third time against us this season, and he and Langmead look set to dominate the scoring tables. It’s not difficult to see why. Both are big and strong, and although neither is particularly gifted on the ball they will always be effective when playing against lads who are one or two years their juniors. Whether or not they will make it at a higher level remains to be seen.

The final game saw Wigan at last get their first win of the season, 2-0 away at Stockport. Two goals from Chris Porter ensured that coach David Lee can at last sleep easy after a series of disappointing results.

Finally, an apology! Last week in Alliance Affairs we reported that Tranmere won away at Stockport 4-0. This was indeed the case, but it appears that it was a cup game and not a league game, so our records have been amended accordingly.

This weekend’s games:

Blackpool v Preston
Bury v Tranmere
Oldham V Stockport

Wigan v Carlisle

Leading reported scorers (league):
