Alliance Affairs - Cup hopes

The Clarets’ fortunes in Group 2 have been mixed. A somewhat lucky win against a very impressive Wigan Athletic was followed by an unlucky defeat at the hands of Blackpool.

This would seem to be par for the course in this group, however, as no team has shown the consistency needed to achieve automatic qualification for the knockout stage. Preston remain unbeaten, but they were somewhat relieved to get a 1-1 draw with Wigan on Saturday.

In fact, so perverse is this group that possibly the best team, Wigan, is currently lying last. David Lee’s side play a fast passing game, with the ball always played in to feet, and caused no end of problems for the defences of both Burnley and Preston. Small wonder they are attracting the attention of Premier League scouts.

As we go into the final Saturday’s games, all four teams have a chance of qualifying. The Football League confirmed to us today that the 15 group winners go through, with the 16th place taken by the "best runner up". After that it’s a straightforward knockout within the north and south regions, with the winners of the two regions meeting in the final.

It will be very close, but victory on Saturday should see us through. Terry Pashley will be keen to avenge the 1-0 defeat by Preston at Gawthorpe in the first league match of the season, as will the young Clarets. They are certainly capable of beating the Lilywhites, but it promises to be a tough encounter.

Kick off is at 11 so, if you’re not going to Bradford why not turn up and give the youngsters your support.
