Alliance Affairs - Clarets go sixth

Last updated : 29 August 2002 By Peter Heywood

In fact, had Mark Rasmussen not headed a last minute winner in the young Clarets’ excellent 3-2 win at Bury it would have been the weekend’s meanest match!

The situation is already looking ominous with Tranmere and Preston opening up a gap at the top. Once again the competition may be to decide who will finish third behind them.

Tranmere recorded their second successive 4-1 win, this time over Wigan. The match itself was quite close until two second-half stoppage goals gave the game a more one-sided look. Preston followed up their 1-0 win against us with a 5-0 demolition of new boys Stockport. Kelvin Langmead scored again, making it 12 goals in 12 appearances at youth and reserve level.

Oldham moved up into third spot, thumping Rochdale 5-1, leaving the Dale rock bottom. Carlisle, having lost 4-2 at home to Bury last week, promptly went off to Blackpool and won 4-2. The Clarets’ win at Bury moves us up to 6th, the home side’s Whalley scoring in successive games.

There are no Alliance League fixtures this Saturday as all clubs are taking part in in-service training, and then the Alliance Cup takes over for the next three Saturdays. The Clarets’ fixtures for their group are:

Saturday, September 7th: Wigan Athletic (A)
Saturday, September 14th: Blackpool (A)
Saturday, September 21st: Preston North End (H)
