Alliance Affairs - Clarets go fourth

Last updated : 03 October 2002 By Peter Heywood

Current league champions Tranmere maintained their 100% record with a thumping 4-0 win away at Stockport, achieved with only ten men for most of the game. Preston remain hard on their heels though following a 2-1 win at Carlisle. The Lilywhites had to come from behind, but once again Kelvin Langmead came to the rescue with the winner.

Bury moved up to third with a fine 2-1 win at Wigan. Latics’ coach David Lee said this was their worst performance of the season. He must be the most frustrated man in the north-west as there’s no doubt that on their day they can beat anyone at this level, playing attractive, attacking football. Certainly, against the Clarets they were better than anything Preston produced in their two games against us.

Our 3-1 home win against Oldham has moved us up to fourth, above the Latics. Damien Hindle scored again for us, making it three in three games since his return from injury. Although not the tallest of players, he is the kind of forward that defenders hate to play against with his non-stop, bustling style combined with strength and good ball control.

Rochdale picked up their first point of the season in a 3-3 draw with the Clarets’ next opponents, Blackpool. Nearly every game involving Blackpool seems to produce lots of goals, particularly with the prolific Matthew Blinkhorn up front. The gangly striker scored yet again, but the Tangerines’ defensive frailty was again exposed as they let slip 2-0 and 3-2 advantages. This point was enough to take Dale off the bottom, a most unaccustomed situation for them.

No doubt there was lots of car-door slamming late into the night in the streets around Spotland on Saturday!
