Alliance Affairs - Can anyone stop Preston?

Last updated : 17 October 2002 By Peter Heywood

After only five games the Lilywhites have already opened up an eight-point lead. Latest victims were rivals Blackpool, who were dispatched 4-0 at Squires Gate. In eight league and cup games they have only failed to win once, a 1-1 cup draw with Wigan.

Last week we reported that Wigan coach David Lee was a lot happier after his side’s first win. He must be positively ecstatic now after the Latics’ 5-1 thumping of Carlisle which takes them above us into second place. Carlisle coach Billy Barr once again had some interesting comments to make: "Certain players in the team are making my job very easy at the moment with the decisions that they are making; the result of this is that they will find themselves going out of football. I want them to change my mind." Ouch!

Jubilation in Stockport as they finally recorded a win, 1-0 away at Oldham. Mattie Davis’ strike was enough to take them off the bottom. A good day too for the other basement team Rochdale as they beat the Clarets 2-0.

Poor Tranmere, the current champions, can’t seem to get a game. After Oldham cried off with mounting injury problems last week, it was the turn of Bury this time.

We play them away next; will the game go ahead?
