A 4-1 defeat against the Dale

Marc Pugh - scored our goal from the penalty spot
But it is not just as bad as it first seems and we could have even come out of the game with a point after fighting our way back into it during the second half.

It was a poor first half from the young Clarets, many of whom were playing less than 24 hours after they had played against Manchester United, and we found ourselves two goals behind at half time.

However, we fought back after the break and pulled ourselves right back into it just seven minutes in after the break when the home side (if Rochdale can be considered the home side in Rossendale) gave away a needless penalty.

Marc Pugh, fresh from his goal against United the night before made no mistake to reduce the arrears.

The equaliser wouldn’t come though and with time running out reserve team coach Mark Yates, by now on the touchline, pushed central defender Neal Trotman up front to try and rescue a point.

Unfortunately that left gaps at the back and Rochdale scored in the last minute of normal time and then again in stoppage time to win it with what was a totally flattering scoreline of 4-1.

It is two weeks before the second string are in action again when Carlisle visit the Turf, and this time with a somewhat more sensible kick off time of 7:00 p.m.

Burnley lined up this afternoon:

Michael Hale, Rob Henry (Nicky Platt 82), Martin Reilly, Neal Trotman, Paul Scott, Marc Pugh, Joel Pilkington, Mark Yates (Darrell Avery 65), Tom Ince (Chris McCann 45), Alex Taylor, Cayne Hanley.
