Yesterday's other match - Ternent's Extra share trophy

Alastair Campbell - presented the trophy
At 10.30 in the morning a scratch team of Clarets known as "Ternent’s Extra" took on the Electric Yetis in a friendly organised under the auspices of Foxes against Racism. This is one of a number of events taking place as part of Kick racism out of Football week.

The result of the match was a 6-6 draw which all involved felt was highly appropriate, the Cup being shared and football surely being the winner.

It was an action packed encounter with the lead changing hands several times. First blood was to the Yetis as an inswinging corner eluded the leaden footed Clarets keeper (someone named Bateman) and the ball nestled Macedonia style in the far corner of the net.

Clarets fought back strongly carrying the game to the Yetis with skilful Accrington ace Neil Starkie prominent in all our best moves including a run past several Yetis and a shot that put us 2-1 up.

It was the Yetis however who turned round in the lead as Clarets began to be overrun in midfield and chances were carved out regularly. After the restart we were again in the ascendant and went ahead 4-3 before a shot the keeper never saw and a dubious penalty restored Yetis advantage.

At this point dodgy keeper Bateman withdrew. The score went to 5-5 and then 6-5 to the Yetis before Clarets scored a late and thoroughly deserved equaliser.

After the game the players were entertained to lunch by Foxes against Racism and Alastair Campbell presented the cup, initially to Yetis although we get it to keep for a few months after Leicester come to the Turf in March.

This was a thoroughly worthwhile experience and all involved enjoyed it. Thanks are due to all who played with a special mention to Si Strickland, Chris Stanworth and Danny Jackson who were all up before dawn to travel down from the North west and at 17 and 16 were amongst the youngest members of our team.

Thanks also to Tony Scholes for help in publicising the game and helping to arrange a lift for Chris and Danny. Last but not least thanks to Nobby and the Yetis for organising the game and making us so welcome.

The players of Ternent’s Extra intend to keep in touch and hopefully organise one or two more games this season. Anyone else interested in playing please contact me at peter@wmclarets.co.uk
