Worthington - Big scores and the odd giant killing

Last updated : 03 October 2002 By Tony Scholes

Cup shocks are not quite as common as they used to be but three Premiership clubs have gone out to Nationwide League opposition and two of them on their own ground.

Natham Ellington celebrates his hat-trick for Wigan
Charlton were first to go when they were beaten in a penalty shoot out after being held to a goalless draw at the Valley by 3rd Division Oxford. The penalties went the way of Oxford 6-5 after each side had taken 9 kicks. Having missed 4 out of 9 Charlton definitely deserved to go out.

Sam Allardyce saw his Bolton side go out in a local derby against Bury and will now be regretting fielding a weakened side whilst Premiership new boys West Brom went down at Wigan 3-1 where Nathan Ellington was the hero with a hat-trick.

It wasn’t all giant killing though and there have been some big scores in this round. Southampton beat Tranmere 6-1 at St. Marys but there were three bigger wins than that. Palace beat Cheltenham 7-0 and it was the same score at Cambridge as the home side went out to Sunderland.

First Division Coventry were the highest scorers though and they put out Rushden & Diamonds 8-0 although R&D did finish the game with nine men.

Somewhat surprisingly Palace included Nik Michopoulos in goal which means he is now cup tied and would not be able to play for us in the competition. That would leave us in a race against time should Marlon pick up an injury at Preston on the Saturday before the next round.

Action from Coventry's win over Rushden & Diamonds
A couple of former Burnley players have been the centre of attention. David Eyres brought Oldham back into the game at Derby with an equaliser and they went on to win 2-1 whilst John Mullin scored the decisive last penalty in Rotherham’s 4-2 penalty shoot out win over Wolves at Millmoor.

Rotherham defender Rob Scott produced the highlight of the round when he scored an incredible own goal in the 120th minute to take the score to 4-4 when it looked as though Rotherham had gone through.

Needless to say David Johnson scored again but on this occasion it was of no value and Forest went out 2-1 at home to fellow 1st Division Walsall and sadly Portsmouth allowed Franchise to win at Fratton Park.

Those Premiership clubs in Europe all come in for the 3rd Round and the draw will take place between 2:00 and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday on Sky Sports 1. There will be 17 Premiership clubs, 11 from the 1st Division and two each from the 2nd and 3rd Divisions.
