Woolmer at QPR

Last updated : 14 November 2008 By Tony Scholes
Stroud's previous Burnley game was our first game of 2006 at QPR, the Northants based Woolmer had refereed the last game of the previous year against Sheffield Wednesday on the Turf.

We lost that game 2-1. Two future Clarets in Chris Eagles and Graham Coughlan scored for Wednesday before Garreth O'Connor scored his last league goal with a penalty, Woolmer being the last referee to award us a penalty for just about a season and a half.

Having said that Woolmer didn't actually give it. Garreth had been brought down by goalkeeper Nicky Weaver but the referee was waving his yellow card at him for diving when his assistant put his flag across his chest. He hurriedly changed his decision and pointed to the spot. Other than that he had a decent enough game.

He's not a referee who is afraid to use his cards but this season he's averaging just over two yellow cards per game with 31 in fourteen games along with three red cards. Of those yellow cards twelve have gone to home team players and nineteen to away team players.

He sent off Plymouth defender Krisztian Timar in their 2-1 home defeat against Norwich and the other two were Millwall's Nadjim Abdou and former Plymouth striker Nick Chadwick now at Hereford. They were both in the same match which Millwall won 1-0.

I think there's every chance he'll cause less problems than we had with last Saturday's referee, he's certainly not one that courts as much controversy.

He will be assisted by John Hayto and Rob Whitton (both Essex) and the fourth official is Matt Foley (Berkshire).
