Woods arrived in pre-season in 1997 under new manager Chris Waddle. He was coming to the end of his playing career and was taken on by the Clarets as the goalkeeping coach but also to act as understudy for Marlon Beresford.
He did that until Beresford was sold, and that brought him back into first team football at the age of 38. He played the last 12 league games of the season during which we won 18 points to avoid relegation to what is now League Two.
He was expected to retire as a player but continue in his coaching role, but new manager Stan Ternent moved him on and the former England international joined Everton where he has been since, working for first Walter Smith and then David Moyes.
Woods has also combined his duties in the last two years with a return to international football as the goalkeeping coach of the United States of America national team.
When Eric Steele was relieved of his duties recently at Old Trafford it was expected that Woods could be in line for the job and today, David Moyes' first as Manchester United manager, he is one of three coaches, along with Steve Round and Jimmy Lumsden, to move from Goodison Park to Old Trafford.
That could lead to Roberto Martinez returning to Wigan to fill the vacancies left at Everton which in turn could see a return to football for some Burnley staff who left for Bolton in January 2010.
Meanwhile, Mark Randall, a loan signing for Burnley from Arsenal in January 2008, is now looking for a new club after Chesterfield today opted not to offer him a new deal. Manager Paul Cook said: "We're still looking for a central midfielder, but it will be a strong, aggressive, holding type of midfielder."
Randall had been with the Spirites for two years after his release from Arsenal and had played a total of 51 games for them, scoring four times.
