Wolves 3 Burnley 0 brief match round up

Things got off to the worst possible start as the Clarets fell behind from the first attack of the game. Kenny Miller was allowed time and space on the edge of the box but his shot looked an easy save for Michopoulos. Unfortunately he could only fumble it into the path of Nathan Blake who accepted the gift and fired high into the roof of the net after only 2 minutes.

The match was all but over only 5 minutes later when Paul Cook became the second Claret in successive matches to be shown the red card reportedly for foul and abusive language though he had been involved in an incident immediately prior to receiving his marching orders.

On an extremely warm afternoon the game then slowed but on 37 minutes Wolves were awarded a penalty for handball. Nik made up for his earlier error to a certain degree by brilliantly palming away Kenny Miller’s spot kick.

It was always going to be difficult chasing the game on such a hot day with 11 men let alone 10 and on 49 minutes Denis Irwin effectively made the game safe for Wolves when he fired home.

Although the Clarets battled hard chances were few and far between and it was left to Kevin Cooper to complete the misery by rounding Michopoulos on 88 minutes and slotting home from a tight angle to make it 3-0 at the final whistle.

I wouldn't take too much notice of the fact that the Clarets are actually bottom of Division 1, especially as we have played one game less than almost the entire division but it is depressing to note that this is the first time we have lost our opening 2 games since the 1977/78 season.

Further reports will follow later.
