Winning goalscorer returns

Micky Mellon
There were just fourteen minutes left when the deadlock was broken in front of the Jimmy McIlroy Stand. The ball had been played in to Andy Payton but he couldn't find the space to get in a shot and laid it back to the edge of the box for Mellon who blasted a rocket of a shot into the corner past the helpless Tony Caig.

Then came the celebration. Mellon had been jeered throughout the game by the visiting fans. It was no surprise, it is something Blackpool fans strangely do for former players on a regular basis, they even used to give David Eyres the same treatment.

Mellon got his own back and sprinted the full length of the field to celebrate in front of them. Not facing them, but with his back turned showing them clearly the name of the back of his shirt.

Tonight Mellon, who is back with Burnley as a youth coach, will step out onto the pitch again as the half time guest, hopefully able to inspire another home win. I think he should come out in a claret & blue shirt with his name on the back and give those fans in the cricket field stand another look.
