Williams has been drafted in as a late replacement into the Welsh squad for their friendly against Poland, a game which will be played in Portugal, after they suffered a number of withdrawals. Should he play it will be his full international debut.

He was called up earlier in the season but then moved back into the Under-21 team for an important qualifier. He was injured in that game and has only just regained full fitness. After two games with the Clarets he could now become a full international.

Martin Paterson meanwhile is in the Northern Ireland squad for their World Cup qualifier against San Marino in Serravalle. There are strong suggestions in the Irish press that Pato could start alongside David Healy at the expense of Rangers forward Kyle Lafferty who could have to settle for a place out wide or even a place on the bench.

For Paterson it will be an eighth cap should he play and his sixth since signing for Burnley last summer.
