Wiley is referee

Last updated : 09 January 2004 By Tony Scholes

Alan Wiley was at Watford last week when they drew 2-2 with Chelsea in the FA Cup in a match that had some amazing decisions by the officials. There was the Watford goal that never went in given by the assistant and then the incredible refusal for the most blatant of penalties not given.

It was the first FA Cup tie to be played at Vicarage Road since our surrender last season and Wiley was there for that one too although we can hardly blame him for the result, in fact it is difficult to recall him causing us any anguish, that was all self inflicted.

He is though a highly respected Premiership referee who this season has handed out 61 yellow cards of which 29 have gone to home players and 32 to away players.

The only player he has sent off all season was Portsmouth’s Patrik Berger who saw red in their 2-0 defeat at Fulham back in November.

Tomorrow Alan Wiley will be assisted by Mike Cairns (Northants) and Paul Norman (Dorset).
