Wiley for first time since August

Last updated : 03 April 2010 By Tony Scholes
He should have refereed our game against Fulham in December, but Mike Jones was a late replacement on that occasion. Just six weeks ago he was here as fourth official for our home game against Blackburn Rovers.

There certainly couldn't be any complaints of his handling of the United game, and definitely not at the penalty he awarded them just before half time. As we know there have been some very dubious penalties awarded against Burnley this season, this was not one of them.

That game had been his first at Turf Moor for a league game since the Waddle season on 1997/98 but he had refereed the FA Cup tie against Arsenal in January 2008 when he sent off Kyle Lafferty, a decision that still divides opinion.

He's comfortably reached three figures this season with yellow cards. In 32 games he's handed out five red cards and 108 yellow cards. The first player he sent off was Bolton's Sean Davis in their 3-2 home defeat against Liverpool back in August.

He then sent off Kieran Richardson of Sunderland as his side drew 2-2 with his old club Manchester United at Old Trafford. That was the game that saw Sir Alex Ferguson claim he was unfit.

In his very next game he dismissed Pablo Zabaleta of Manchester City in a 1-1 draw at Wigan and more recently Abdoulaye Faye of Stoke saw his red card as they drew 1-1 with City. In his last Premier League he reduced Bolton to ten men as they lost at Everton with the dismissal of full back Gretar Steinsson.

Bolton went on to lose that game 2-0 and their manager spoke out at Wiley's handling of the game, presumably recalling the fact that Wiley had refereed their game at Arsenal that had so incensed the Bolton backroom team.

Of his 108 yellow cards this season, 47 have gone to home team players and 61 to away team players. At one point home and away yellow cards were level at 36 each but recently the away teams have been receiving far more.

That was seen in his last game which was the Championship game between Newcastle and Nottingham Forest last Monday. Four players were yellow carded in that game. They were Jose Enrique (Newcastle) along with Garath McCleary, Wes Morgan and Kelvin Wilson (all Nottingham Forest).

His assistant referees today are Scott Ledger (South Yorkshire) and Sean Procter-Green (Lincolnshire). Fourth official is Leicestershire Premier League referee Kevin Friend who refereed our home win against Birmingham back in October.
