Whitestone returns

It took some doing to turn in a worse performance than Lee Mason had done in the Preston game but Northamptonshire referee Whitestone, labelled Whitewash on the message board, turned in a horror show as Boothroyd's Watford went even uglier than usual and just about got away with it.

Only he will know how three of four yellow cards went our way and only he will know just how on earth Darius Henderson stayed on the pitch. It was only Whitestone's second game in the Championship last season he didn't referee at our level again until this season.

In his first two Football League seasons he averaged a red card every three games with an above average yellow card count. This season thankfully it's nothing like the same. He's sent off five players and yellow carded 73 in thirty games.

Two of the red cards have gone to home players and three to away players whilst the yellow cards have been as even spread as possible with 37 to home team players and 36 to away team players. Five of those yellow cards have gone to players who have previously played for the Clarets - Michael Ricketts, John Oster, Ian Moore, James McEveley and Delroy Facey.

I hadn't seen Whitestone before the Watford game last season and I've not seen him since, but he can't possibly do anything other than turn in a better performance than he did just over a year ago.

He will be assisted tomorrow by Adrian Holmes (West Yorkshire) and Iain Siddall (Lancashire) with fourth official duties to be carried out by Dean Mohareb (Cheshire).
