Where next for Gazza?

Last updated : 02 August 2002 By Tony Scholes

When Gazza arrived in the States it was clear they were shocked at his lack of fitness but they have found out just as we did that he can no longer get himself fit enough to play the game at a high level. That ability to go past an opponent has clearly gone and is something that will not return.

His signing for Burnley was greeted with fanfares but in all honesty it was a mistake. Yes he nearly scored from a free kick on two occasions in the last few minutes against Coventry but it was always evident that he was never going to be another Ian Wright for us.

DC United though made no commitments to him and have now issued the following statement through director Dave Kasper;

"After long and involved discussions and having thoroughly considered all matters regarding a permanent, long-term move to DC United and Major League Soccer, both United Head Coach Ray Hudson and Paul Gascoigne have mutually agreed not to pursue a contractual obligation for the remainder of the 2002 MLS season."

DC Manager Ray Hudson, a fellow Geordie, added,

"Despite the unfortunate and diminishing time schedule, this has been an enjoyable and worthwhile endeavour, but all parties involved are in agreement that the decision not to proceed at this time is the right decision.

"DC United is sincere in its very best wishes to Paul and his future and is indeed grateful to both Paul and (agent) Ian Elliott for their professional manner and social conduct throughout this exchange both on and off of the field."

So where now for the former England favourite. Local radio were trying to suggest a possible return to Burnley but I think we can rule that one out with 100% conviction. This latest blow for him could mean the end of his football career.

Although his agent Ian Elliott suggests he has a number of options that seems hardly likely if a move to DC United was seriously considered.
