What's in a number?

Dean West - moves to number 15
The whole idea is to nothing more than to give each player a unique number that allows those watching to know exactly who is on the pitch. And of course it allows for more marketing with names and numbers on the shirts.

But should anything be read into the numbers? Certainly Burnley’s first ever numbered squad list included a 1-11 that looked very much like a starting line up at the time. It read Paul Crichton, Dean West, Mitchell Thomas, Micky Mellon, Steve Davis, Gordon Armstrong, Glen Little, Paul Cook, Andy Cooke, Andy Payton, Lenny Johnrose. It must have been very close to what Stan expected his line up to be at Wycombe on day one.

Only two of those players remain now and there could well be some significance for one of them, Dean West

After four years of wearing the number 2 shirt finds himself allocated number 15 for the 2003/04 season, following today’s release, with new signing Lee Roche, expected to be used as a right-back, having been given number 2.

Is there also some significance in the fact that the number 5 has been left vacant for now? Maybe a new central defender is on his way as one of the still four or five players that Stan wants to bring in. It is now the only one of the first 11 numbers still to be allocated.

Our player list has not been as accurate as it could be over recent months, although it does now include Camara and Roche if not Jensen. That will soon be rectified with a new improved list that will see players added and removed almost instantly as players join and leave the club.
