We've got a Friend

That was the home game against West Ham two seasons ago when I described his performance that night as shocking. We were beaten 1-0 and Friend handed out three yellow cards to Mo Camara and West Ham's Hayden Mullins and Nigel Reo-Coker. It was a performance that wouldn't let the players get on with playing, he stopped the game far too often, and he was certainly noticed far too often.

He's not an over the top referee when it comes to dishing out the cards, but he does have his moments. He handed out no fewer than seven yellow cards in the League Two game between Stockport and Barnet at the beginning of October and surpassed that towards the end of the money with eight yellows and a red card in Plymouth's home draw against Ipswich, the side leading the Championship on cards this season.

The player sent off was Fabian Wilnis, a decision that ruled him out of their game against us at the beginning of November. He's one of five players he has sent off this season. The others are Macclesfield's Kevin McIntyre in their 3-1 defeat at Peterborough, Swansea's Darren Pratley as they lost 3-2 at Brighton and most recently he sent off both Danny Cullip and Sammy Clingan as Nottingham Forest suffered a 5-0 defeat at Oldham.

Yes, all of the players sent off have been away team players. As for the yellow cards, there have been 66 in 23 games with 24 of them going to home team players and 32 to away team players. It could be said he is on something of a home run, all of the last nine games he has refereed have ended in home wins.

Tomorrow he will be assisted by Stuart Burt (Northamptonshire) and Stephen Cooke (Nottinghamshire) with fourth official duties to be carried out by Richard Smith (West Midlands).
