We're going to York in our .......

Last updated : 17 June 2013 By Tony Scholes

It's a while since we've played at York. It was Boxing Day 1998 to be exact. We were struggling in the league at the time and had lost four of the previous five league games. That game ended in a 3-3 draw with our goals coming from Andy Payton (2) and Mark Robertson although in truth Gordon Armstrong scored and the goal was incorrectly awarded to Payton.

We've played them once previously in the League Cup. It was in the 1994/95 season and again in the first round. Then it was a two legged affair. We won the first leg at home 1-0 with Warren Joyce on the scoresheet.

We trailed 1-0 for a long time in the second leg but then two goals in three minutes from Liam Robinson and John Gayle turned the tie our way and although York scored again we went through 3-2 on aggregate and a tie with Liverpool in the second round.

This season's tie will be played at York's Bootham Crescent (I think the Kit Kat has gone now) in week commencing Monday 5th August with the Tuesday the most likely date for the game and it will give Wes Fletcher an early opportunity to play against his old club. Wes signed for York just last week after being released by the Clarets in May.

Elsewhere in the draw, the Football League's newest clubs have both been drawn away. Mansfield travel to Tranmere with Newport having a difficult tie at Brighton.

There are some local derbies in there too. Sheff Wednesday travel to Rotherham, Huddersfield face Bradford and the most notable is Preston's home draw against the Seasiders.
