Wembley goalscorer is guest

David Eyres was the first player ever to score a goal on a Sunday for the Clarets and he couldn’t have chosen a better day to do it, the play off final at Wembley in 1994. It capped a fantastic first season in Claret & Blue for him, he had netted 19 times in the league for us from his position on the left hand side.

He never repeated that sort of goalscoring but he was certainly an important member of the side for another three years and more. He played as a striker for a period and Adrian Heath played him at left back which unfortunately curtailed his goalscoring to the extent that he hit only three all season, and two of those were from dead ball kicks.

In the following season it was a massive shock when he was sold to neighbours and rivals Preston, Chris Waddle getting back most of the £90,000 we had paid Blackpool for him in 1993. He’d been appointed captain by Waddle and the former England international constantly sung his praises, suggesting that the decision to sell was made very much in the board room.

The one consolation was that at 33 he was coming towards the end of his career – little did we know. Eight years later and he’s still playing regular football in the same league for Oldham. At 41 he’s the oldest outfield player in the Football League, and probably by some distance, and despite not coming into league football until he was 25 he has now made 770 league and cup appearances for his three clubs.

Oldham boss Ronnie Moore started the season with him on the bench but soon realised his mistake and David Eyres is now one of the first names on the team sheet again. He’ll certainly get a superb reception tonight from the Turf Moor crowd.
