Weller back on the Turf

Weller made his league debut for the Clarets in a 2-0 home win against Carlisle in December 1995, having come through the youth system at Turf Moor, and made his last appearance in the final game of the 2003/04 season against Sunderland.

He played a few games for Rochdale last season and some non-league football, as he struggled with injuries but looked all set for a return to league action this season when he went on trial to Carlisle. However injury again forced him out and he retired from playing at the age of 30.

Since then he’s been back at Burnley, working with the Community Programme as well as coaching with the Centre of Excellence, and he’s gaining a reputation there as a coach with the youngsters.

There’s no doubt his best season for Burnley was in the 2000/01 season, our first back at this level. He was returning from virtually two years out of the game with a serious illness but returned to such an effect that he walked away with most of the Player of the Year awards.

It was then that the injuries kicked in and for the next three seasons he was never able to get a long run in the side because of this, and that led to him being released by former manager Stan Ternent in 2004. Hopefully he’ll now be successful in his new role at the club.
