Welcome to the card man of Gloucester

Last updated : 25 November 2005 By Tony Scholes

Crewe, as always, have collected less cards than any other club in the division, but at times it seems to be something of a mission for Probert who has now reached 78 for the season in just 18 games.

This will be his second Burnley game this season, he was the man in charge when we visited Leicester last month and on that occasion he handed out just three yellow cards in total. On Wednesday of this week, in the LDV Vans game between Oxford and Leyton Orient, there were only two, the least for him all season.

Back to that Leicester game, and there is no doubt that all three yellow cards were harsh, Micah Hyde’s was ridiculous. It was a game with just one bad foul all night, that on Duane Courtney in the later stages of the game. Needless to say he took no action at all other than to award a free kick.

I said at the time that he gives the impression of being a referee that knows the rules but doesn’t know the game, that is after two poor games so far when refereeing the Clarets. It could have been worse though, Graham Laws was originally allocated to this game.

The assistants tomorrow are Alan Greaves (Yorkshire) and Russell Green (Lancashire) and the fourth official is Colin Harwood (Greater Manchester).
