Wednesday have confirmed that we have made the formal offer for Tudgay. They have described it as derisory and most unwelcome and have accused Burnley of an underhand tactic to unsettle their player.

The Hillsborough club say they attach great value to the player and appreciate his contribution over the past there years and say their squad development plan is based on building a team around players like Marcus.

They continue by confirming that Tudgay has shown his commitment recently by verbally agreeing to a new long term contract and say this would have already been signed if it we not for the inappropriate actions of Burnley Football Club and the player's agent by engineering stories in the media which were clearly designed to create an opportunity to move Marcus Tudgay at a value that is disrespectful to the player.

Wednesday confirm they are not in under financial pressure to sell players and as such would not entertain any bid for any player if it did not enable them to enhance their playing squad.

Chairman Lee Strafford said: "It's disappointing that an agent would act in such a cavalier manner when he is supposed to be protecting the interests of the player and also the right of the club to protect its assets. Sheffield Wednesday will not be taken advantage of in this situation.

"We recently sold a left winger for a significantly greater amount than is now being offered for one of the best strikers in the Championship and the player was in an identical contractual situation to Marcus, but at that time SWFC was more interesting in taking a defensive position as a business. Now we are looking to progress and we are not interested in taking any steps that do not allow us to build on our progression.

"Marcus has stated that he is happy at Sheffield Wednesday and has a good working relationship with Brian Laws, we would like Burnley to act in a more realistic and respectable manner so that we can get on with preparing for next season.

"From my perspective, we want to go into the future with Marcus and see him fulfil his potential playing in the Premier League with Sheffield Wednesday, a club which is widely regarded as a club that can sustain a position in the top division."
