Webster gets cup game

Webster has been a busy man so far this season and although he has kept his red card in his pocket so far he has certainly been busy with the yellow card and has already shown in twenty-one times in just five games.

He got off to a busy start with seven cards in his first game, the televised clash between Bradford City and Wolves, but there was certainly a case for at least one red card in that game. Back in Yorkshire last Saturday there were six more in the derby game between Huddersfield and Barnsley.

These sort of card happy performances are not the norm for Webster although he has had one big card day at Turf Moor before. Last season there were just 78 yellow and 6 red cards in 30 games and there were never more than five cards in a game.

In fact there were two clean sheets and one of those was on his last visit to the Turf for the 2-0 win against Gillingham towards the end of last season. He also refereed the 3-3 home draw against Crewe earlier in the season and on that occasion yellow carded Ian Moore along with one Crewe player.

The 2000/01 season, his first in the Football League, was no different and there were just 58 yellow and 2 red cards in 25 games. During that season though he created his own personal best (or worst) at Turf Moor when he issued seven yellow cards and one red in our 2-1 win against Barnsley.

Ian Moore again got a yellow from him as did Ian Cox and Lenny Johnrose. The yellow card also came out for four Barnsley players and they also had Chris Morgan sent off for a professional foul when he brought down Ian Moore as he broke clear at the Cricket Field End.

Overall though, and despite his start to this season, Colin Webster is not a card happy referee and hopefully he will return to that tonight.
