Webster for second time this season

Last updated : 09 December 2005 By Tony Scholes

He didn’t have too bad a game at Crewe, although he was somewhat lenient with a couple of home players who could so easily have been sent off for use of the elbow, but at times he is an over fussy referee who struggles to get to grips with the concept of allowing the game to flow.

He managed to hand out five yellow cards that afternoon and he continued to wave cards around like confetti for the first two months of the season when he was averaging more than five per game.

However, he has calmed down somewhat after the usual early season burst and is now down to under four per game with 78 from 21 games. He can also add seven red cards to that and three times this season he has sent off two players in one game, and on all three occasions it has been one from the same side.

One of those games was at Leicester when home defender Alan Maybury was sent off for a bad foul and QPR’s Paul Furlong followed him after reacting. Only this week Leicester and QPR have been fined £20,000 and £14,000 respectively for failing to ensure that their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.

Back to Webster and we can expect that any yellow cards shouldn’t all be going one way – of those 78 so far, 35 have gone to home players and 43 to away players.

Last season at Bramall Lane was a first for Burnley with a female assistant referee, Amy Rayner from Leicestershire. She will be on duty again tomorrow along with Richard West (Yorkshire) whilst Paul Varley (Yorkshire) will be the fourth official.
