Wear your colours with pride – three days to go

Last updated : 18 April 2002 By Tony Scholes

Thanks to the Accrington Clarets web site for giving it the most prominent of plugs on their front page and also to Arthur Asquith of ‘There's no smoke without fire' fame for the mention in his article. Thanks also to The Longsider web site where you will find further support.

It seems the only problem for a lot of people wearing older shirts is very much down to the fact that they can no longer get some of these shirts on, and no despite comments made this does not mean the shirts have shrunk in the wash. I speak from experience. Do as I have done and borrow one.

We have also received more support by email in the last day starting with a plea to people not to choose the jade and black halved away shirt of 1993/94 season:

Trevor Yate

Please ban the green and black kit. You know what happens if I see green and black on match days (we lose).

Peter Grimes in Johannesburg South Africa

My first Burnley shirt was a Christmas present in 1962 (I was then 8 years old) in the days before "replica shirts" but my Dad said it came from the shop in Nelson where Burnley FC bought theirs, to this day I still believe him. I still have the scarf I wore at Wembley when we beat Stockport (Why have we got to rely on them not be slaughtered on Sunday to get to the play offs?) The scarf will come out on Sunday in solidarity with the rest of you.

Danny Pilkington

I am very keen for this idea with the shirts on Sunday although I am in a predicament. Do I wear this seasons White shirt (Are you including away colours?) or do I wear the 1994 Wembley shirt. The only method I can think is to wear them both and swap round at half time! Your comments would be much appreciated in helping me make my decision.

By all means Danny change round at half time

Neal Edmondson

Can't you get the LET to say something as well, that way all those without the internet will know about your fantastic idea as well !!!

Neal – the local press have been contacted and they have pledged their support and we are certainly aware that they can reach the non internet audience. Those of us on the net can also help by letting friends know.

Steve Haithwaite in Australia

C'mon lads lets lift & play as well as everyone knows we can we've come this far don't blow it now. All the best

David Hunter

To All Clarets Everywhere.

Even though I will not be at the turf on Sunday, I will be heading the opposite way down the M6 & M5. I will be proudly wearing my classic , no sponsor , shirt from last year and my son (of six months on Sunday) will be proudly clutching his Bertie Bee mascot (I have been unable to find Burnley FC baby grows or t-shirts for under six month old babies any where, help please !!!!!).

Come on everyone........ Even if you don't own a shirt or scarf and you won't be at the Turf , wear the colours and you never know how it may help the lads.

Mike Garland in Sussex

Wish I could go to the match but couldn't get a ticket. I will be wearing my 70's Burnley shirt at Wimbledon vs. Barnsley instead.

Dean Cockett

Right, I've got an idea chaps.....I know its late but you boys are pro's!! How much would it cost to get thousands of Claret and Blue cards to hold-up for when the players come out??What a site to have 3 sides of the ground in complete Claret and Blue....
Funding for this can come from sponsorship......so on the front of the cards will be either Claret or Blue but the back of the card will bear the companies' name that have paid for them all......can this be done? Would BFC want to sponsor this venture with
www.burnleyfootballclub.com on the back or you chaps with www.claretsmad.co.uk?? Do any of you guys work for large companies that are well in there with a generous boss??
It would put the Nou Camp to shame!!

P.S a couple of thousand balloons wouldn't go amiss either!!!!

Great idea Dean but this would be impossible to organise now – your idea won't be ignored though and it is certainly one we will look at for next season. Meanwhile get your shirts and scarves out.

Keith Fitton

Great idea again but why can we not extend it to banners and flags. I remember when the old Cricket Field End was a riot of claret and blue. The Kop at Liverpool has come alive again with flags. Is it a possibility?

Why not indeed. I saw Anfield myself recently and this campaign was inspired by a comment I saw on the crowd at Celtic last weekend.

The Fleetwood Five

The Fleetwood Five will be there in a selection from the last ten years! Awlright pop pickers? Notalf. C'mon you Clarets!

Paul Allonby

'Come on you clarets' all of us who have supported the clarets since the 60's, realise that this is the biggest 'roller coaster ride' in football. No other club has experienced the highs and lows of the game in such extremes as we have. We are special, there's something that sets us apart from the rest, but I just can't think what. Only my heart truly knows what it is. We are Burnley.

Thanks to everyone for the great support. Don't forget you can still SEND us your support.

Today the picture features the shirt worn during our last promotion season of 1999/2000 and fittingly worn by our leading scorer and Natural Born Claret Andy Payton.
